IIS PROJECT MANIFESTO
The Institute of (Im)possible Subjects
A transnational feminist collective producing education and art events and an collectively edited online open access journal – launching on International Women’s Day 2016
Our platform posits a series of interdisciplinary questions about transnational digital cultures and feminism. Building from conversations built over the past twenty years between scholars and artists and activists, from the streets to independent art spaces to college campuses, this online forum pursues questions regarding digital spaces and global racialism/racisms, gender, and labor politics; the transnational exchange of visual cultures and social justice through media and technoscapes; and the intervention of contemporary artists and activists in (re)defining other landscapes of knowledge. This is a project that aims to construct a decolonized knowledge commons, framed by women’s voices and experiences in multiple settings.
The elements of our upcoming journal include:
1. Online publications: We will engage in ongoing discussions to be hosted every three months by a rotating team of artists/activists/scholars. Each team will pose a question about a contemporary social issue to be considered by contributors, who will be invited to respond to the research question and engage each other’s responses through ongoing contributions over the session.
2. Online art works: We will host/commission online artistic works that correspond to the
research question of each session.
3. Downloadable readers: We will produce creative commons licensed downloadable pdf
readers that will be available on the site for download.
